While watch companies frequently trumpet the heritage of their artisanal techniques, Cartier may have outdone them all by releasing a watch decorated in a technique with 5,000-year-old origins. The latest Rotonde de Cartier 42 mm sports the brand’s familiar panther motif in gold granulation. This technique in which gold beads are fused together to create patterns is traced as far back as ancient Egypt, but it was perfected by the Italian Peninsula’s Etruscans prior to the rise of Rome. Cartier’s adaption of the style creates a striking relief of the animal that will appeal to those with modern tastes as well as the historically minded. (800.227.8437,
